THE HILITE GROUP

Meet The HiLite Group

Jackie and Geno Guerra | Chula Vista, CA | Residential Construction Project Management for Greater San Diego

Jackie Guerra

Co-Founder and Day-to-Day Operator | On the California contractor’s license since 2001

When homeowners contact us, they’re usually looking for answers on how to turn their dream project into reality.

Where do I start? Is this really possible? Who can I trust to do it right?

For many, those questions come after a frustrating experience. A contractor who stopped returning calls. A project that ran over budget with no clear explanation. Work that started with promise but sat unfinished for weeks while calls and messages went unanswered.

I hear those stories often. They’re a big part of why Geno and I built The HiLite Group the way we did.

My name is Jackie Guerra, and I oversee the day-to-day operations of The HiLite Group. When you call, I answer. And if I happen to miss your call, you can expect to hear back within minutes.

You'll never have to wonder what's happening with your project.

I coordinate the subcontractors, manage the schedule, oversee the paperwork, identify potential issues before they become costly problems, and keep you informed every step of the way. That’s my job, and I’m accountable for it from start to finish.

I’m also listed on California’s contractor’s license for The HiLite Group. This isn’t just my business—it’s my professional responsibility. When you hire The HiLite Group, you’re working directly with me, and I take that responsibility personally.

Our clients deserve more than quality craftsmanship. They deserve clear communication, dependable follow-through, and a team that treats their home with the same care and attention we would our own. That’s the standard we hold ourselves to on every project.

"If I miss your call, you will hear back from me within minutes. That is not a sales line, that is how I actually work. One of our current clients told me it has meant everything to him. He said, I know you are always there."
- Jackie Guerra

Why nothing slips through the cracks

Before taking on a central role in the business Geno and I built together, I worked as a legal assistant and paralegal. That experience shaped the way I approach every project today.

A legal background teaches you to pay attention to details, follow through on commitments, stay organized, and communicate clearly—even when situations become complex. Those are the same skills that keep a construction project moving smoothly.

Every remodeling project has dozens of moving parts. Schedules change, materials arrive, inspections are coordinated, and decisions need to be made at the right time. My role is to keep everything organized, anticipate potential issues before they become problems, and ensure that nothing falls through the cracks.

Most importantly, you’ll always know what’s happening. Clear communication isn’t an afterthought—it’s part of the process. From your first consultation through the final walkthrough, my goal is to make sure you feel informed, supported, and confident every step of the way.

"Organizing has always been a superpower of mine. When we decided to rebuild the business around project management, it was a natural fit."
- Jackie Guerra

Geno Guerra

Co-Founder  |  Licensed California General Contractor Since 1979

More Than 50 Years of Experience in the San Diego Market

I began working in construction in 1973, and six years later I earned my California general contractor’s license. Over the next four decades, I built some of San Diego’s most complex and challenging roof structures – the kinds of projects other contractors often walked away from.

Those years taught me more than how to build. They taught me where construction projects can go wrong, how to identify potential problems before they become expensive repairs, and why doing the job right the first time always matters.

In the mid-1990s, I discovered a new tubular daylighting product that had just entered the San Diego market. I recognized its potential immediately and became one of the first installers in the country. As demand grew, I moved into operations management, helping expand the company nationwide while training installers across the country and sharing the techniques and standards that produced consistent, high-quality results.

That experience – and a shared commitment to doing business the right way – led Jackie and me to start The HiLite Group in 2001.

Today, every project we take on benefits from decades of hands-on construction experience, proven problem-solving, and a commitment to quality that has been built one project at a time for more than 50 years.

The problem I watched happen for 45 years

"I spent 45 years on the contractor side of this business. I built this company the way I did because I saw where homeowners were being let down—and I knew there was a better way."
- Geno Guerra

After more than four decades in construction, I had seen the same problems repeat themselves. Homeowners were often left in the dark about costs, unsure who was responsible for what, and frustrated by poor communication throughout their projects.

When Jackie and I expanded into full-service residential project management, we set out to build a company that addressed those concerns from the start.

Our approach is straightforward. We charge one transparent management fee. Your subcontractors and suppliers bill you directly, so you see exactly where your investment is going. There are no hidden markups and no surprises buried in the budget.

Today, Jackie leads every project. She manages each client relationship, coordinates every trade, oversees the schedule, and keeps homeowners informed from the first consultation through the final walkthrough.

The decades of field experience I’ve gained are the foundation of our process. Jackie’s organization, communication, and day-to-day leadership are what bring that experience to life on every project we complete.Revised:

Our skylight background and what we offer today

Over two decades of skylight expertise in San Diego

Where It All Began

The HiLite Group was founded in 2001 as a skylight company. For more than two decades, skylights were our primary focus, helping homeowners throughout San Diego bring more natural light into their homes. Along the way, we developed a depth of knowledge and experience that few companies in this market can match.

Gene was among the very first tubular daylighting installers in the country. With his background in complex roof structures, tubular skylight, and custom skylight design became a natural extension of his expertise. He understood not only how to install a skylight, but also how to integrate it into a home’s structure safely, beautifully, and with long-term performance in mind.

Over those twenty-plus years, we’ve worked with virtually every type of skylight product, roof configuration, installation challenge, and repair scenario imaginable. That experience has given us a practical understanding that only comes from thousands of projects and decades in the field.

“If you have a skylight question, we’ve probably seen it before. We’ve made every mistake there is to make—and probably invented a few. That’s actually what makes our experience valuable. We know what works because we’ve learned what doesn’t.”

— Gene Guerra

Today, while The HiLite Group manages complete home remodeling projects, skylights remain one of our specialties. Whether you’re adding natural light to a single room or incorporating custom daylighting into a whole-home renovation, you’ll benefit from more than two decades of focused experience and problem-solving.

Still the Skylight Experts. A Broader Mission.

While skylights are no longer our primary business, the expertise we’ve built over more than two decades remains an important part of who we are.

Today, The HiLite Group focuses on residential construction project management, including ADU construction, room additions, whole-home renovations, and major remodeling projects. Our role is to oversee every aspect of the project—from planning and coordination to scheduling, communication, and final completion—so homeowners have a trusted advocate from start to finish.

When a project includes skylights, our experience becomes a distinct advantage. We understand the structural requirements, product options, waterproofing details, and installation challenges that can affect both performance and long-term durability. Because we’ve handled these situations thousands of times, we know what to watch for and how to integrate skylights seamlessly into the larger construction process.

We also continue to offer standalone skylight consulting for homeowners, contractors, and design professionals. Whether you have questions about an existing skylight, need guidance choosing the right product, or want a second opinion on an installation or repair, we’re happy to share the knowledge we’ve gained over decades in the field.

Our scope has grown, but our commitment to solving problems, sharing honest advice, and helping homeowners make informed decisions hasn’t changed.
